Kolkata Gripped by Floods: Five Dead After Torrential Rain
Kolkata and its surrounding areas are reeling from the aftermath of intense overnight rainfall, which has led to widespread waterlogging and, tragically, the deaths of five people in rain-related incidents. The fatalities occurred in separate incidents across Beniapukur, Kalikapur, Netaji Nagar, Gariahat, and Ekbalpur, areas situated in the central and southern parts of the city.
The severe waterlogging has significantly disrupted daily life, causing major traffic congestion and impacting suburban rail and Metro services. Commuters faced considerable delays and difficulties navigating flooded streets. Many low-lying areas have seen water inundate homes, resulting in property damage and displacement.
In response to the adverse conditions, several schools across the city have announced a rain holiday, prioritizing the safety of students and staff. The southern and eastern parts of Kolkata experienced the heaviest rainfall, bearing the brunt of the storm.
Data released by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) reveals the extent of the deluge. Garia Kamdahari recorded an astonishing 332 mm of rainfall in just a few hours. Other areas severely affected include Jodhpur Park (285 mm), Kalighat (280 mm), Topsia (275 mm), and Ballygunge (264 mm).
The sudden and intense downpour overwhelmed the city’s drainage infrastructure, leading to rapid water accumulation and widespread flooding. Authorities are working to pump out waterlogged areas and restore normalcy, but the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The disruption to transportation networks has also affected the supply of essential goods and services, adding to the challenges faced by residents. Local communities are coming together to provide assistance to those affected by the floods, offering shelter and support to those displaced from their homes.
The KMC is urging residents to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay informed about weather updates. They are also deploying teams to clear debris and address urgent infrastructure issues arising from the flooding.
