Abbas Accuses Israel of ‘Crime Against Humanity’ at UN

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas delivered a scathing critique of Israel’s actions in Gaza at the United Nations General Assembly, accusing the nation of committing ‘crimes against humanity.’ Abbas’s address focused on the ongoing conflict and the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

Abbas strongly condemned the Israeli military operations, asserting that they constitute a gross violation of international law and human rights. He called upon the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions and to intervene to protect Palestinian civilians.

“The situation in Gaza is unbearable. The world cannot stand idly by while innocent people are killed and their homes destroyed,” Abbas stated. He highlighted the suffering of Palestinian families, the destruction of infrastructure, and the lack of access to essential services such as healthcare and clean water.

In addition to his condemnation of Israel, Abbas also addressed the issue of Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza. He reiterated his long-standing call for Hamas to disarm and relinquish control of the territory to the Palestinian Authority. “We cannot achieve peace and stability while Hamas continues to operate as a parallel authority with its own armed forces,” he declared.

Abbas emphasized the importance of a two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace in the region. He urged the international community to renew its efforts to facilitate negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, based on the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

The Palestinian President also called for increased humanitarian assistance to Gaza, stressing the urgent need to address the immediate needs of the population. He appealed to donor countries and international organizations to provide financial support and essential supplies to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.

“We seek a just and comprehensive peace, a peace that guarantees the rights and dignity of all Palestinians,” Abbas concluded. His speech underscored the deep divisions and challenges that continue to plague the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, highlighting the urgent need for a renewed international effort to find a peaceful resolution.

The speech comes at a critical time, as tensions in the region remain high and efforts to revive the peace process have stalled. Abbas’s remarks are likely to further inflame passions and complicate the already complex dynamics of the conflict.

Disarmament of Hamas and other militant groups, as called for by Abbas, remains a significant obstacle to progress. The group has consistently rejected calls to lay down its arms and has vowed to continue its armed struggle against Israel.

The international community’s response to Abbas’s speech remains to be seen, but it is clear that the Palestinian issue will continue to be a major focus of attention at the United Nations and beyond.
