India Successfully Tests Agni-Prime Missile from Rail Launcher

India has successfully conducted a test launch of the Agni-Prime intermediate-range ballistic missile from a rail-based mobile launcher. This marks a significant milestone as the first-ever launch from a specially designed platform integrated with the national railway network.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh confirmed the successful test via a statement on X, hailing it as a “first-of-its-kind launch.” He emphasized that this achievement underscores India’s expanding strategic deterrence capabilities.

“The first-of-its-kind launch carried out today from a specially designed rail-based Mobile Launcher has the capability to move on the Rail network without any preconditions, which allows users to have cross-country mobility and launch within a short reaction time with reduced visibility,” stated Singh.

The Defence Minister also extended congratulations to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), and the Armed Forces for their roles in the successful test.

According to the statement on X, “This successful flight test has put India in the group of select nations having capabilities that have developed a canisterised launch system from a mobile rail network.”

The Agni-Prime is a next-generation ballistic missile engineered to engage targets at distances of up to 2,000 kilometers. This advanced missile system enhances India’s strategic reach and strengthens its national security posture. Its canisterised launch system also improves mobility and responsiveness.

The successful test signifies a major leap forward in India’s defense technology and its ability to project power effectively.

The integration of the missile launcher with the rail network provides unprecedented mobility and operational flexibility. It allows for rapid deployment and launch from various locations across the country, enhancing the element of surprise and reducing vulnerability to preemptive strikes. This capability is particularly crucial in maintaining a credible deterrent against potential adversaries.

The Agni-Prime’s advanced features and the innovative rail-based launch system underscore India’s commitment to developing and deploying cutting-edge technologies to safeguard its national interests. This development strengthens India’s position as a responsible nuclear power with a robust and credible deterrence posture.

  • The Agni-Prime missile has a range of up to 2,000 kilometers.
  • It is a next-generation ballistic missile with advanced technologies.
